TODAY IS SEA SUNDAY, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Without them we would not have most of the items we buy in the shops. Today’s second collection is for Stella Maris (Apostleship of the Sea), the Church’s official maritime welfare agency. It supports seafarers both practically and spiritually. This collection is vital to enable it to continue its work.

SCHOOL LEAVERS: Next Friday, 19th July Year 6 pupils from both St. Richard’s and St. Mary’s will be leaving primary school. We wish them well in their new schools. The jump from primary to secondary education is always a major change. We hope that our boys and girls will look back fondly on their time at St. Richard’s and St. Mary’s.

MEN’S SUPPORT GROUP: The next meeting of the men’s group will be on Friday 19th July at 7pm in St. Mary’s Presbytery Meeting Room. Please feel free to come along. For further information contact Fr. Laurence on 0161 224 1895.

CARDINAL NEWMAN CANONIZATION: Pope Francis will canonise Blessed John Henry Newman in St Peter’s Square on Sunday 13th October 2019 alongside 4 others. This will make Cardinal Newman the first English person who has lived since the 17th century officially recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) was ordained as a Church of England priest and soon became the leader of the Oxford Movement but converted to Catholicism in 1845. He founded the Oratory in England and was later made a cardinal. When he died at the age of 89, more than 15,000 people lined the streets of Birmingham for his funeral.
