The Word This Week

God does not have favourites, Saint Paul tells us, but God always makes a special place for the poor, and those whom society would push into second place. In the traditions of Israel God invited the people to have special care for the widows and orphans – so the story we hear in today’s Gospel would have a particular resonance. The paradox of Christian faith is this: in giving, we receive. Christ gave everything, sacrificing his very life, and in return received a new and unending life. The widow in the first reading gave her last food for the prophet Elijah, and in return received an endless supply. This is a challenge to us in our turn: what are we invited or asked to give, and in what spirit will we do so, and what will be our reward.

SOUTHERN CEMETERY TODAY: Mass will take place today 8th November at 2.00pm.

OFFERTORY COUNTERS REQUIRED: Volunteers are needed at St. Mary’s to help with the counting of the weekend collections after the 11 o’clock Mass on Sunday’s. Each group volunteers about once every five weeks. For more information or to sign up to e a counter, please contact Richard Molloy on 07791 925 190.

WELCOME into the family of the Church to Tobi Oke and Shamyan Ollerenshaw who were baptised at St. Richard’s on Saturday, 7th November. Our prayers and good wishes go with them and their families.

REMEMBRANCE ASSEMBLY: On Wednesday, 11th November the Year 6 children from St. Mary’s School will be leading a remembrance assembly in the school hall at 9.15am in a solemn tribute to the armed forces and their families who are affected by all wars past and present. Everyone is welcome.

ST. RICHARD’S HALL: The four new classrooms on Sutcliffe Avenue are now in use. The new hall is still not ready for use. There has been a problem with the damp proofing of the walls resulting in water coming in through the side walls. The problem has been identified and work will begin soon to rectify the problem. As a result we will not be having the Christmas Fair this year at St. Richard’s.
