The G7 Meeting: CAFOD has issued an urgent CALL TO ACTION ahead of the 11th-13th June meeting of the G7. This year, it is our turn to be the hosts. Our Government has said it wants to use this meeting of world leaders in Cornwall, to work out how to “build back better” after the pandemic. The world needs this to mean the cancelling of debts of those poorest countries struggling with both coronavirus and debt crisis, and to push banks to do the same: to call on companies to prevent human rights abuses throughout their supply chains; to get a commitment from all to keep temperature rises below the disasterous 15-degree threshold. How to Act: To remind Boris Johnson the eyes of the world are on him, please sign the petition to the Prime Minister at cafod.org.uk/reclaim. The aim is to ensure that people in the poorest communities are not – as Pope Francis warns is often the case – “Treated as an afterthought.” Jesus gives us unmissable examples of his commitment to the poorest, and he now needs us to be the channels of his love.

As a response to the recent Pastoral Letter and in preparation for the UN Climate Change Conference, COP26, in November, and in support of Climate Sunday, we are asked to set aside a particular Sunday for prayer for the Earth, our Common Home. Bishop John has asked that this intention be reflected in our celebration of our Sunday Masses next weekend 12th/13th June. Bishop John will celebrate Mass at the Cathedral on Sunday 13th June at 11am.
