THE WORD THIS WEEK: In this section of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus speaks through his actions and today hear about a miracle of resurrection. This widow has nothing left, her security and her loved ones are gone. Jesus reaches out to her, crossing cultural boundaries, as to come in contact with a dead body. The crowd must have been shocked as Jesus moved towards the bier. He acts out of deep sympathy and compassion for the woman who has lost her only son. Often we can give up on people, those who suffer addiction, refugees, prisoners, people who endure one tragedy after another. We see an example of Jesus restoring someone to life. He restores the son to his mother; He restores the crowd’s faith through his deep compassion. Through Jesus, the crowd experience God’s presence among them in a time of total despair.

R.C.I.A. DAY: Next Sunday 12th June at 2.30 pm there will be a diocesan afternoon on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at St Bernadette’s parish centre (corner of Bury New Road and Selby Avenue, Whitefield). This will be an opportunity for anyone who would like to know more about RCIA, and also for those who can share some experience of working with the rite in their parishes. We know that this is something vital in the church and that Bishop John, too, is concerned that we work together in developing ways in which the Department for Formation supports RCIA in the diocese. Further information can be obtained from Fr Chris Lough telephone (0161 766 2356).

RICHARD’S SUMMER FAIR: The Parish Summer Fair is one of our biggest fundraising events of the year and this year’s Fair promises to be fun-packed with the usual variety of stalls and refreshments.
