“We saw his star as it rose

and have come to do him homage

In the East, this Season of Christmas is called the ‘Time of Manifestation’, or Showing. Today is the ‘Feast of the Manifestation’, or the Showing of the Saviour to the whole world, to all nations. In the wise men who travel from the East, we see all the nations other than the people of Israel being welcomed at the New Temple of the New Covenant – the new born child in the manger. A look at the Psalm response shows this: “All nations shall fall prostrate before you, O Lord.” The same is true of the key word in the second reading: ‘Revelation’. Remember that for the people of Israel this was to be their Messiah, come to restore their fortunes. By this feast, we proclaim God’s plan was to extend his salvation to men and women of every nation, of every time and every place – including us. In many ways this is our Christmas Feast, when we celebrate the Good News of the Saviour’s birth revealed at last to us.

We extend a warm welcome to Seminarian Bob Hayes from Oscott College, Sutton Coldfield who will be staying at St. Mary’s on placement during the month of January.

Many thanks to all who donated during the year to the CAFOD and CORNERSTONE wall boxes.   During the week we were able to send a cheque to CAFOD for £556.37 and to Sister Lucy at Cornerstone a cheque for £125.63.

St. Richard’s and St. Mary’s new school term begins again next Wednesday, 6th January, 2016. We hope staff and pupils had a restful holiday and are reading for the challenges ahead.

Following the success of the 500 Draw in November, it has been decided to start a monthly draw in 2016. We are hoping for 300 members between the two parishes. Membership for the year is £15, paid in January. A monthly draw will take place the last weekend each month, except December when the draw will be mid-month. Providing we have 300 members the 1st prize each month will be £50, 2nd £25 x 3. The December draw will be 1st £300, 2nd £200, 3rd £100, 4th £50 and 3 x £25. Agent’s books will be available from next weekend. See flyers at the back of church for full details.
