Feasts of the Week

Monday 26th Oct. Saint Chad and Saint Cedd, Bishops

Wednesday 28th Oct. Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles

Saints Chad and Cedd: Chad, who died at Lichfield on 2nd March 672, and Cedd, who died at Lastingham (Yorkshire) on this day in 664, were brothers who were educated at Lindisfarne under Aidan. Cedd was founded of many monasteries and was sent as a bishop to evangelise the East Saxons and established his See at Bradwell (Essex). He died of the plague at his monastery in Lastingham. Chad was abbot of Lastingham when chosen Bishop of Northumbria, but his ordination was contested by Wilfrid, and he humbly withdrew. He was then sent as Bishop of Mercia, where he founded the See of Lichfield. Despite the shortness of his ministry, he was immediately revered as a saint because of the holiness of his life, his outstanding humility, and his dedication to preaching the Gospel.

Pray for the Sick and Housebound and those who are known to you. May the Good Lord strengthen and comfort them. Pray also for all who care for the sick.

Grant eternal rest to those who have died recently.

REFLECTION:  Most of us have no idea what it is like to be physically blind. Spiritual blindness is another matter altogether – I’m sure we can all admit to bouts of that! The blind man in today’s Gospel must not have been blind from birth. His request to Jesus is ‘Master, let me see again.’ He had the gift of sight in the past, and he knows what he is missing. He wants to be able to see again. Our faith journey can be a bit like that. Sometimes we see things clearly, and sometimes we are blind to the bigger picture and to where our lives are leading. Dark clouds can come down, perhaps when we are struggling to deal with a stressful time or an illness. We can stray off the path and forget to let God in or to ask for help. But if, like the blind man, we call to Jesus for help, he will come to our aid. ‘I will bring them back’ promises the Lord in our First Reading from Jeremiah, ‘by a smooth path where they will not stumble’.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE: St. Mary’s Parish Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on Saturday, 7th November at 11am. During this very special parish celebration we prayerfully remember all our deceased parishioners and all whose funerals were celebrated in the parish during the past 12 months. (November 2014 to October 2015). After the Mass light refreshments will be served in the parish centre. We also devote the month of November to remembering not only our own loved ones who have died but “all who have gone before us marked with the sign of Faith.” A box at the back will be provided for you to place the names of your loved ones in. It will be brought up with the offertory gifts on Sundays, and all whose names are in it will be remembered throughout the month of November.
