Although today’s Gospel is short, there is plenty of food for thought. The apostles have returned to Jesus after their mission. They are exhausted and we are told have not even had time to ‘eat’. They are in need of rest and nourishment in body, mind and spirit. Jesus gives good instruction to them and to us today: ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while’. Our world demands so much from us, everyone is so busy all of the time. Jesus’s instruction tells us that time out is so important; we need to look after ourselves. We must listen to the need in ourselves for rest and nourishment and also respond to the real needs of others.

Last Friday our Year 6 pupils left St. Richard’s Primary School. Next Thursday, 23rd July Year 6 pupils will be leaving St. Mary’s. Primary School, we wish them well in their new schools. The jump from primary to secondary education is always a major change, adjustment is necessary. We hope that our boys and girls will look back fondly on their time at St. Mary’s and St. Richard’s. All are invited to a special Mass of Thanksgiving next Wednesday evening, 22nd July at 6.30pm in St. Mary’s church.

I wish all who are going away for a holiday a safe and pleasant time, and the people who will spend the holiday time locally I wish a restful refreshing time. Recharge the batteries for the challenges ahead.
