THE DEEP END – ‘Come and see’

Today marks the beginning of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and this year’s theme for the week is ‘Jesus said to her: “Give me to drink”,’ from the story of Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well.

The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman invites us to try water from a different well and to also offer some of our own. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an opportunity for encounter and dialogue with others, and a time to ask God for the gift of unity.

Today is also the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Speaking last summer when he met with migrants and asylum seekers on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, Pope Francis urged ‘brotherly responsibility’ towards our fellow human beings.

Today’s readings see Jesus invite the disciples to ‘come and see’ where he lived. He welcomed them into his home and they stayed with him for the rest of the day. The example of Jesus encourages us to be welcoming, to extend a warm invitation to all, and to spend time with others in conversation and friendship.

Today (Sunday) at the 11 o’clock Mass we welcome our children and their families. We are now halfway through our preparation programme for First Eucharist and it seems appropriate that Jesus’ invitation in the Gospel today is to ‘come and see’. The invitation to come and see was also offered to each one of us on the day we were baptised. We were invited to come and see what wonderful things the Lord had in store for us as a member of his family. Today we will bless water as a reminder of our baptism.

We have received £333.80 towards the costs of printing the Emissary Magazine for 2014. The amount of £696 was paid during the week to the printers. The Emissary magazine can be found at the back of church for anyone who would like a copy. We ask that a donation be given to help towards the above costs.

The 83rd annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, led by Bishop Arnold, will take place between Friday 31st July and Thursday 6th August 2015 and it is hoped that people from all over the Salford Diocese will join the bishop and priests of the diocese, to Our Lady’s shrine at Lourdes in France. See poster on the noticeboard in the church porch.

Travel has been organised by plane. For further details about travel and accommodation please contact Joe Walsh Tours on 0161 820 8790 or by email: For all other aspects of the pilgrimage, please contact the Lourdes Pilgrimage Office – Tel: 0161 817 2209 or visit the pilgrimage website at
