Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand
Throughout the first three weeks of Advent
our focus is very clearly on the End of Time, and the Second Coming of the Lord – not on the run up to Christmas (that only comes in the last week). If we view Advent as a Season preparing for Christmas these readings will make little sense – and neither will the figure of John the Baptist who appears today: if it was about the preparation for Christmas, then John the Baptist, preaching after Jesus was born, becomes a confusing figure: his role is to preach to us, as he did of old, and to prepare us for the (second) coming of the Lord. Everything gets more specific today: what is being preached is not an event, but a person: Isaiah promises him, John welcomes him, Paul invites us to imitate him.

ST. RICHARD’S CHRISTMAS FAIR
The total raised last Sunday was £2,883.58. Many thanks to everyone who donated items for the stalls, the very generous cash donations, especially the tremendous response from parents, children and staff at St. Richard’s School. Thanks to those who came, those who organised the fair and for all who helped and worked so hard on the day.

ST. RICHARD’S & ST. MARY’S CHRISTMAS DRAW
The draw will take place next Sunday 17th December in St. Mary’s Hall after the 11 o’clock Mass. All sold ticket stubs and money should be returned to either St. Richard’s or St. Mary’s by next Thursday 14th December at the latest to ensure they are included in the draw. Thank you for your support.

ST. MARY’S APF/MILL HILL PROMOTERS: If possible, could the promoters who have not yet returned money collected from the red mission boxes please do so by Wednesday 20th December at the latest. Any money received after that date will not be included in this year’s total for St. Mary’s. Thank you.
